Troubleshooting Guide

Get your hardware security key detected again

Hardware keys fail for predictable reasons: transport mismatch, browser permission blocks, or low-power USB paths. This guide removes guesswork with direct checks.

Quick fixes

  1. Try another USB port and avoid hubs for first test.
  2. Enable NFC on phone and tap at the correct position.
  3. Grant browser security key permission when prompted.
  4. Confirm key supports the transport the site requests.

Transport mismatch is the #1 cause

Not every key supports every transport mode. A USB-only key will not respond to NFC prompt and vice versa.

Check key model support before concluding that the account or browser is broken.

Browser and OS permission path

Browsers can silently block device access if prior prompts were denied. Reset site permissions and retry.

On managed endpoints, endpoint protection software can block hardware authenticator events.

Backup strategy after recovery

Register two security keys from different manufacturers and keep one offline for disaster recovery.

Document where each key is enrolled and test quarterly.
